Aim
The course aims to develop understanding of the way that the human body adapts to the surrounding environment and to acute and chronic training. Specifically, the course covers the regulation of energy metabolism, respiration, cardiovascular system and muscle function and their roles in exercise performance.
Course objectives
After completing the course, students should be able to demonstrate:
- Advanced knowledge of physiological factors affecting sporting performance and their mechanisms.
- Thorough knowledge of environmental influences on performance and physiological adaptations to extreme environments.
- The ability to critically evaluate, review and present research in exercise physiology

- Cardiovascular responses to exercise
- Respiration and acid-base balance
- Muscle physiology
- Fatigue, performance and training
- Performance nutrition and ergogenic aids
- Environmental physiology
- Training and performance in extreme environments
Entry requirements
A Bachelor degree consisting of at least 180 credits, including a degree project of at least 15 credits in sports science, physical education, or physiotherapy.
Or
A Bachelor degree consisting of at least 180 credits, including a degree project of at least 15 credits in another subject, as well as a minimum of 60 ECTS credits in one or more of the following subjects: physiology, exercise physiology, testing methods in sports science, kinesiology, biomechanics, coaching and leadership, sports nutrition, sports medicine, and training sciences.
And
English course 6/English course B from Swedish Upper Secondary School (Gymnasium) or the equivalent.
Selection rules and procedures
The selection process is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and the local order of admission.
Teaching form
The course is delivered in English. Teaching methods include online-recorded lectures and campus-based teaching including laboratory work and seminars. The course also includes independent work in the form of written assignments. Detailed information is provided in the study handbook.
Examination form
1100: Assignment, 5 Credits
Grade scale: Seven-grade scale, A, B, C, D, E, Fx and F. Fx and F represent fail levels.
Module 1 - individual written scientific report.
1200: Online discussions, 1 Credits
Grade scale: Fail (U) or Pass (G)
Module 2 - active participation in online discussion forums associated with the online lectures.
1400: Laboratory Practicals, 1.5 Credits
Grade scale: Fail (U) or Pass (G)
Module 3 - active participation in laboratory and seminar activities on campus.
The course is examined through the following compulsory modules: an individual written assignment, online discussions and active participation in labs and seminar activities (that require physical presence on-campus).
The examiner has the right to offer alternative examination arrangements to students who have been granted the right to special support by Mid Sweden University’s disabilities adviser.
Retaking of passed exams to improve grades is not permitted by Mid Sweden University.

Examination restrictions
Students registered on this version of the syllabus have the right to be examined three (3) times per year according to this syllabus. For modules that require physical presence, examination is only offered once (1) per year.
