Aim
To give background and introduction to the area and knowledge and skills around management and implementation of quality work. The course also aims at developing the student’s ability to actively participate in, design and lead concrete improvement work based on strengths in his/her organization or company.
Course objectives
After completed course the student should be able to:
Present the background to the quality concept, understand what quality means and distinguish between different ways of describing quality and to use the quality definitions, especially with a starting-point at customer orientation.
- Give examples of real applications of the definitions, methodologies and tools described in the course i.e. explain when they are applicable how they should or can be used and what results to expect when rightly implemented.
- Describe and use management systems, company assessments including self-assessment in an organization.
-Identify oppurtunities and difficulties in an organization.
- Show ability to practically create generative objectives, themes and formulate questions for Appriciative Inquiry-initiatives.
-Be able to reflect and reproduce the Appreciative Inquiry-philosophy and method and the basic principles and theories that
Appreciative Inquiry is based on and relates to.
Content
In this course the focus is leadership for quality work, different quality tools, customer orientation, management systems, company assessment and Appreciative Inquiry (AI) that is a new way of change management. To be able to study these parts it is required to have understanding of certain quality definitions and because of this we start with one introduction part where background of the quality field is presented. Other areas of the course is the seven management tools, cost of poor quality, balanced scorecards, brainstorming, self-assessment, QFD, ISO, management of quality work.

The tutoring is performed in the form of lectures and web material. The course also contains assignments to be solved in groups.
Examination form
I100: Assignment Report, 3 Credits
Grade scale: Fail (U) or Pass (G)
T100: Examination, 4.5 Credits
Grade scale: Seven-grade scale, A, B, C, D, E, Fx and F. Fx and F represent fail levels.
Examination of this course are done through hand-in assignments and an exam. To pass the course you need to pass the exam and also get a pass grade on all the hand-in assignments.
