Aim

The course aims to provide in-depth knowledge of the philosophy of science and theory of science, mainly focusing on the scientific theoretical foundations of the social sciences. It includes knowledge of different scientific theoretical approaches and how to critically evaluate knowledge production in the social sciences, including the connection between different scientific theoretical approaches and scientific methods.

Course objectives

After passing the course, the student should be able to:
- discuss and explain different scientific theoretical approaches
- argue for and against different theoretical approaches in science
- critically evaluate knowledge production in the social sciences
- analyze and discuss the connection between different theoretical approaches to science and social science methods.

Content

The course offers advanced studies of the philosophy of science and theory of science, focusing on the foundations and conditions of the social sciences. The course deals with different theoretical approaches to science, the connection between different theoretical approaches to science and scientific methods, and how to evaluate social science knowledge production critically.

Entry requirements

Completed bachelor's degree of at least 180 credits, of which at least 60 credits in Media and Communication science, Journalism, Political science, or Business administration.

Selection rules and procedures

The selection process is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and the local order of admission.

Teaching is conducted in the form of seminars and self-study.

Grade scale: Seven-grade scale, A, B, C, D, E, Fx and F. Fx and F represent fail levels.

Grading: Seven-grade scale, A, B, C, D, E, Fx and F. A – E represent pass, Fx and F represent fail levels.

Students registered attending this course using this version of the syllabus have the right to be offered three examination opportunities during a period of 1 year. Thereafter, the examination form according to the latest current version of the syllabus applies.
