Aim

This course provides third-cycle students with skills and knowledge in scientific writing and oral presentation of scientific studies.

Course objectives

After successful completion of the course, the third-cycle student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate deep and relevant knowledge and skills in the scientific publishing process
  • Demonstrate relevant knowledge and skills in the scientific peer review process
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills in scientific writing
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills in oral and poster presentations of scientific findings
  • Identify and evaluate journals in the third-cycle students field of research.

Content

The course addresses the following areas: the scientific writing process, literature search and review, the publishing process and the peer-review process of scientific writing, and oral and poster presentations.

Ethics and academic integrity in the scientific publishing process is discussed including plagiarism, conflict of interest, parallel submission.

The course is both theoretical and practical giving third-cycle students the opportunity to work on their own research in the context of the course content.

Entry requirements

To be eligible for the course, students must be enrolled in third-cycle education and use the credits toward their academic studies.

In order to benefit from the course, the third-cycle student must have a scientific manuscript under development.

Teaching form

The course will be offered through distance learning. The course language is English. All assignments, both oral and written should be completed in English.

The course is based on student-oriented learning with seminars where the student's own texts form the course's working material. The course is based on a seminar format that combines lectures, group dialogue, and peer-coaching.

Students are expected to participate in all seminars and contribute to the dialogues having read the mandatory literature.

Students will complete several written assignments based on their own research, and serve as peer reviewers of the scientific papers.

To support learning during the course, students will be paired in writing-dialogue teams of two. The teams will serve to support reflection and exploration of the literature and provide feedback to one another as you continue to develop your texts.

Examination form

Examination is based on the following:

• Active participation in all seminars

• Completion of all assignments

• Development and improvement of one’s own scientific text

• Written and oral peer-review of another student’s text

• Paper presentation using slide show software (15-20 minutes)

• One-minute poster presentation

This course is one of two in a series. Students are recommended to take OVR001F Scientific Philosophy, Ethics and Research Methods before this course commences.

Students who have completed the course or parts of it have the possibility to have results credited.
