Aim
The aim of the course is to provide comprehensive understanding of contemporary Theory of Science and ethics, especially in relation to the Social Sciences. The course is offering the students the theoretical frameworks and conceptual tools necessary for an overview, facilitating their analyses with regard to their own subject of research.
Course objectives
After the course is completed, the student shall be able to
- give an account of the main outlines of the different approaches within the Theory of science, and within ethics,
- take a critical attitude towards the different approaches within the Theory of science, and within ethics,
- critically assess the usefulness of the major approaches in the Theory of Science in relation to different research questions and ethical considerations,
- relate the different approaches within the Theory of science, and within ethics, to the student’s own area of research.
Content
The course consists of two parts. The first part deals with different approaches in the Theory of science, the second part deals with research ethics in relation to these different approaches. Practice in information search, lead by a librarian, will be given. The students will be given presentations of the researchers of the department and their research projects.
Entry requirements
Bachelor's degree with a major (90 HEC) in Political Science or in a main field of study within the behavioural or social sciences.
Selection rules and procedures
The selection process is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and the local order of admission.
Teaching form
Teaching will take place as lectures and seminars.
Examination form
1000: Introduction to Advanced Studies in Social Sciences, 7.5 Credits
Grade scale: Seven-grade scale, A, B, C, D, E, Fx and F. Fx and F represent fail levels.
The main examination form consists of the writing of an individual examination memorandum. In addition, seminar assignments will be given.
