Aim

The student shall acquire knowledge in solid state physics required for solving engineering exercises and continued studies in physics, as well as show the ability to use the acquired knowledge to solve a research related problem.

Course objectives

The student shall exhibit:
- knowledge about concepts in solid state physics;
- the ability to use physical and mathematical relations to solve less complicated problems in solid state physics;
- the ability to use knowledge from previous courses on problems in solid state physics;
- the ability to preform experiments and interpret the results;
- the ability to document experimental work and create clear and evident elaboration reports and written solutions to problems;
- the ability to use knowledge acquired in the course to independently solve a research related problem;

Content

Crystal structures, lattice and reciprocal lattice, elastic oscillator, vibrations and phonons, heat capacity and heat conduction, the free electron model, energy bands with for semiconductors and metals. Fermi surfaces.

Entry requirements

A person meets the entry requirements for the course if he or she has been admitted to a third-cycle study programme and will be given credit for the course in that study programme.
