Ensuring tomorrow - back to the future or to the future and beyond
After habitat destruction, invasive (non-native) plant and animal species are the second greatest threat to biodiversity worldwide. In Ireland, many species that have newly arrived in Ireland have disrupted local ecosystems.
Whats the project about
We encourage students to be inspired by the past and/or use current and future technology to develop solutions to current problems. In Sligo, we want the students to focus on developing solutions to combat invasive species.

Regulations have been introduced, but more needs to be done to combat this problem. https://biodiversityireland.ie/top10/10-most-unwanted-species/
More about the project and goals
Challenge: How can we be inspired by the past and/or use current and future technology? What might we need and what could a solution look like?
-Research existing data and tools
-Think about how technology might develop
-Collect and combine existing data
-Think about sustainability in the past
-Make an overview, presentation, website or even a mobile app for it!
Study areas
We could imagine a technological approach – developing an app or website (computer science, software engineering) in collaboration with other competences on ecology, land use planning etc. (environmental science, biology, geography, behavioural science, economics and law).
Students are welcome from all disciplines! The project could be adapted to encompass all subjects that students are likely to have.
