The electrical energy consumption in residential buildings is approximately 30% of the total in the EU. Therefore, reduction in electrical energy consumption in homes will have a substantial impact on the total reduction. Reductions can be achieved in many different ways ranging from using better building materials to using information technologies.

Project Goal
The goal of this project is to investigate how information technology and sensor systems can be used for optimizing the energy usage in homes. The project should be conducted in inter-disciplinary teams and result in a prototype demonstrating the implementation of a home-automation system.

Study Areas
This project targets a number of different study areas. While each study area contributes with an individual expertise to the project outcome, interaction between the study areas is required in order to achieve a successful project result. An interactive idea exchange between “The Internet of Things” project should be established. The smart home can be used as backbone and react on events triggered by devices connected via the Internet of things. 

Electrical Engineering/Computer Engineering/Computer Science

The students contribute to the project with a domain perspective. Possible questions to be addressed include:
  • What technologies are required for implementing a home automation system
  • How to implement the system in hardware and software

Economy

The students contribute to the project with a domain perspective. Possible questions to be addressed include:
  • What are the economic aspects on home-automation technologies
  • What are currently the limiting factors for a wider acceptance of the technology

 

Environmental Sciences

The students contribute to the project with a domain perspective. Possible questions to be addressed include:
  • Which environmental parameters should be monitored to ensure a comfortable living enviro
  • Where is the threshold between comfort and saving energy

Design

The students contribute to the project with a domain perspective. Possible questions to be addressed include:
  • Design of a sensor casing, as model and if possible as 3D print
