Sustainable development is a central and important part of the overall strategy of Mid Sweden University.

The strategy states a number of goals that are related to sustainable development directly or indirectly, where the most direct goal specifies that Mid Sweden University should:

  • Increase the integration of sustainable development in education, research and collaboration.
  • Contribute to the UNs global goals for sustainable development and Agenda 2030, and thus also to a sustainable future.
  • Reduce the organization's negative impact on the environment.

In addition, the strategy includes goals concerning interdisciplinary working methods, collaboration, digitization and technology-supported learning and work environment for employees and students, all of which are important parts of the work with sustainable development. 
 
The university has two sustainability coordinators who support the work of integrating sustainable development in education, research, collaboration and in the university’s own activities.

Mid Sweden University's climate strategy 
 
As part of Mid Sweden University's work with sustainable development, the Rector has signed the Climate Framework, which is an agreement between higher education institutions in Sweden of a common approach to climate change and of reducing emissions. Based on the Climate Framework, Mid Sweden University developed a Climate strategy, and integrated measures to fulfil this strategy in the regular planning of the operations.

One of the goals of the overall strategy of Mid Sweden University is to:  

Increase the integration of sustainable development in education, research and collaboration. We will contribute to the UN's global goals for sustainable development and Agenda 2030, and thus also to a sustainable future. The organization's negative impact on the environment must be reduced.  

Mid Sweden University's work with sustainable development includes social, economic and environmental perspectives. This includes contributing to climate change at both national and international levels. The climate strategy focuses specifically on the climate. 

Concerning indirect impact on climate change, measures to reduce emissions are judged to have the greatest effect in these areas:  

·       Education/Students 

·       Research 

·       Collaboration and utilization 

Concerning direct impact on climate change, measures to reduce emissions are judged to have the greatest effect in these areas: 

·       Business travel 

·       Energy consumption 

·       Purchasing and procurement of goods and services  

 

General goals

In order to be able to lead the business and implement the climate strategy, it is required that both management and employees have good knowledge of different perspectives within sustainable development and specifically climate issues. Access to digital tools is necessary to reduce climate impact, regardless of whether it concerns education, research or support activities.

Mid Sweden University's general goals for 2030 are: 

• People in leading roles at Mid Sweden University have knowledge of sustainable development, including climate issues 

• All employees at Mid Sweden University are offered training in sustainable development to contribute to active work to reduce climate impact 

• Mid Sweden University has digital tools, technology-supported learning and virtual mobility that provides greater opportunities for both employees and students to reduce climate impact through travel-free activities. 

Education, Mid Sweden University's goals for 2030 are: 

 • Mid Sweden University's educational program includes sustainable development, including climate change and climate change  

• Interdisciplinary collaborations that integrate different perspectives on sustainable development, climate challenges and climate change are well developed, which contributes to a holistic view.  

• Sustainable development is an integral part of quality education.  

• Students from all subjects and programs have access to student networks to get involved in issues of sustainable development and climate change.  

• Mid Sweden University offers digital commissioned education that provides knowledge that contributes to climate change and sustainable development in collaboration with other universities, organizations and authorities 

Research, Mid Sweden University's goals for 2030 are: 

The research within Mid Sweden University's research areas on sustainable development, including climate change, is multidisciplinary and contributes to climate change.  

• Researchers and research students from different fields of science collaborate to solve complex research challenges in sustainable development, including climate impact  

• Strategic research collaborations with other universities and external actors  

• Mid Sweden University's research related to climate change and sustainable development is well known and reputable.

Collaboration, innovation and utilization, Mid Sweden University's goals for 2030 are: 

• Mid Sweden University's collaboration in both education and research internally, with other universities and external actors contributes to achieving global goals and counteracting climate change  

• Mid Sweden University's employees contribute to imparting knowledge about sustainable development including climate change and climate change by developing educations in collaboration with society actors and actively participate in the public debate  

• Researchers and research students are active in research communication and debate in various forums in society to make visible knowledge that contributes to solutions to climate challenges. 

Business travel, Mid Sweden University's goals for 2030 are: 

• Mid Sweden University's international relations are largely digital, which contributes to reducing the climate impact through travel.  

• Mid Sweden University's employees work more actively to minimize travel in connection with national meetings and conferences by traveling climate-smart and finding alternative forms of meeting.  

• Mid Sweden University reduced its climate impact (carbon dioxide equivalents per annual workforce) for travelers compared to the 2019 level in line with the 1.5 degree target. 

Energy consumption, Mid Sweden University's goals for 2030 are: 

• Mid Sweden University shall, in collaboration with the property owners, work for a reduced energy use and seek sustainable alternatives.  

• Property acquisition (lease agreement, redevelopment and new construction) must take place in accordance with Sweden Green Building Council's highest environmental classifications. 

• Mid Sweden University, in collaboration with the property owner, will reduce operating electricity to a level that is in line with the 1.5 degree goal. 

Purchasing and procurement of goods and services, Mid Sweden University's goals for 2030 are: 

• All Mid Sweden University's purchases and procurements have clear sustainability requirements, including those that have a climate and environmental impact.
