The Nursing Colleges Become Part of Mid Sweden University | 1995 |
The integration process between the University College of Sundsvall/Härnösand and the University College of Östersund did not just involve those two university colleges, but also the nursing colleges of both counties.
In Östersund, the question of possibly integrating the nursing college with the University college had been investigated and it was agreed that there were clear advantages to such a merger. In Västernorrland, where there were nursing colleges in both Sundsvall and Örnsköldsvik, the discussions had not progressed as far. However, the main reason why the process was delayed was that the Government authorities wanted to address the issue collectively on a national level.
So as not to lose momentum in a matter where the outcome seemed assured, the two nursing colleges were invited to participate in the planning of the new Mid Sweden University. When the Government authorities finally made their decision in principle that the county council district nursing programmes would be nationalized, and central and local negotiations were concluded, the nursing colleges could be established as institutions of Mid Sweden University in 1995.
