Mid Sweden University offers a position in Health Sciences, Campus Östersund, for a project in Environmental Physiology, within the subject Sports Sciences. The position is connected to the “Environmental Physiology Group” (EPG) studying human performance in extreme environments and lead by Professor Erika Schagatay. The research group focuses mainly on physiological responses and adaptations to environments with limited oxygen availability, including freediving underwater and high altitude environments, and also thermal extremes. We are examining the general human and individual performance potentials in order to better understand and apply adaptational processes. The doctoral project could be addressing one or several of the project areas.

Requirements: For admission the applicant should meet the general and specific entry requirements in accordance with the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance, Swedish: SFS 2006:1053, HF 7 kap 35 §, and be considered to have the specific abilities required to benefit from the study programme. A person meets the general requirements if he or she has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle (advanced level), or has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad. Specific requirements are at least 60 credits in physiology or medicine, acquired by studies in e.g., sports science, medicine, biology, physiotherapy, nursing or equivalent.

Selection criteria: In addition to the formal requirements, the selection will be based on quality of independent work (e.g. publications, degree work or projects), completed courses, practical experiences of research work, and an interview with the candidate. Prior experience of research work in environmental physiology is meritorious, in particular work in the fields of high altitude, freediving and thermophysiology. Experience of practical work in extreme environments and in different countries is meritorious, as well as good English knowledge. Personal qualities, such as the ability to work independently and in a group, initiative, analytical skills and other aptitude for doctoral studies will be assessed together with the formal subject knowledge. A short description of the applicant’s background, interests and visions as well as the motive for applying for the position should be included.

Employment: The position is 4 years full time, and expected to lead to a PhD degree, or 5 years at 80% research, combined with 20% teaching or other work.

Location: Östersund. Part of the work is field work.

Starting date: 1 April 2017, or subject to discussion.
