Mid Sweden University has an open position for a postdoc at the FSCN research centre in the Materials Science/Physics group.
Fibre Science and Communication Network (FSCN) is a multidisciplinary research centre at Mid Sweden University. FSCN carries out research, creates new applications and business opportunities based on sustainable bio-materials from the forest. In the Materials Science group, where the postdoc will be active, about 20 researchers and graduate students are working with nanomaterials for green energy applications.

This position requires expertise in charge transport at nanostructured materials’ liquid interfaces. As Postdoctoral Fellow, you will carry out fundamental research to gain an understanding of the mechanisms of energy harvesting in lithium ion batteries with carbon-silicon based anodes. You will be working with the fabrication and optimization of size, shape and porosity of silicon particles, as well as development of composite material to create lithium ion batteries with increased energy storage capacity and improved life-time. The work tasks include fabrication of anodes and lithium ion batteries and characterization and analysis of governing mechanisms for energy storage. Voltammetry and measurement of charge transportation in liquid, electron microscopy and surface and nanoparticle characterisation are the main analytical techniques that will be used to investigate the critical parameters.
The position is funded by The Energy Agency (Energimyndigheten) and is part of the project “KM2: square kilometers of functional surfaces” led by Mid Sweden University. The successful applicant will have his or her office at Mid Sweden University, but part of the project will be carried out in collaboration with the companies Vesta Si in Ljungaverk, located a one-hour car drive from Sundsvall, and Superior Graphite, located in Sundsvall.
Excellent oral and written communication skills are required. Other duties will include generation of invention disclosures and publication of results in peer-reviewed journals. The candidate must be able to independently design and carry out experiments, as well as contribute productively as part of a multidisciplinary applied R&D team.
- Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years from an accredited college or university.
- PhD in chemistry, materials science, physics or a related field
Other desired qualifications, one or more of the following: - Solid understanding of electrochemistry
- Background in electrochemistry, solid state physics, or materials science
- Experience using main surface and nanoparticle characterization methods
- Experience from working with lithium ion batteries, laser processing, or synthesis of nanoparticles
The employment process is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 and the appointments procedure at Mid Sweden University.
Terms of employment
From 1 April 2017, or according to agreement, until 31 March 2019.
