The conference organizers invite proposals featuring research and evaluation on the cultural and creative sectors as resources and drivers for sustainable regional development. Delegates from the UCCN, researchers, evaluators, students, policymakers, funders, commissioners of research and evaluation, practitioners, and other stakeholders are invited to submit proposals for scientific presentations. Presenters are encouraged to address one or more of the conference themes or seven Creative Cities thematic areas. Of particular interest are proposals that focus on designated UNESCO Creative Cities or other regional entities that address one of more of the seven creative fields identified by UNESCO – Crafts and Folk Arts, Design, Film, Gastronomy, Literature, Media Arts, and Music – or other relevant cultural attributes and creative development strategies. Also of specific interest are proposals that focus on the cooperation and synergies between cities and their surrounding rural regions within the context of the creative sector.
We are enthusiastic about receiving proposals that span the research process from promising concepts to works in progress to published work. Additional topics of interest include:
- Strategies showing promise for enhancing the economic, social, cultural, and environmental development of creative cities and regions
- Theoretical foundations informing current research and practice
- Methods used to research and evaluate cities of culture and creativity
- Measures being used to assess progress in sustainable urban/regional development
- Findings from studies focusing on cities/regions of culture and creativity, including in-depth case studies of Creative Cities, pilot projects, and examples of collaboration among cities/regions
- Lessons learned that might inform the work of others studying, leading, funding, or developing policy regarding cultural and creative cities or regions
- Policies and practices that appear to be most/least helpful in supporting sustainable urban/regional development
In the spirit of constructive critical inquiry and with the aim of advancing research, evaluation, and practice, presenters are encouraged to reflect on the strengths and challenges encountered in developing urban or regional initiatives and throughout the study process.
Session types:
- Individual paper presentations – 15-minute presentations, followed by Q&A
- Assembled sessions, including but not limited to panel discussions, facilitated dialogues, and multipaper presentations – 75-minute sessions, including Q&A
In keeping with the central role of creativity, presenters are encouraged to employ creative and engaging strategies for presenting their work in this forum.
Abstracts should be a maximum of 1000 words (plus one table or figure), be written in MS Word, and emailed to uccn2016research@miun.se. Please follow the specific “instructions for authors” when preparing your submission (available by clicking here).
