MILAB – A Research Laboratory for innovation and collaboration
MILAB (Materials and Innovation Laboratory) at Mid Sweden University offers advanced material analysis and serves as a collaborative platform where research and industry develop together – whether you represent a large industrial company or an early-stage startup.
“MILAB is not a traditional analysis laboratory. Our vision is for it to be a point of contact that strengthens collaboration between companies and Mid Sweden University,” says Magnus Hummelgård, Associate Professor of Materials Physics and Head of the Laboratory.
Companies using MILAB gain access to a laboratory environment equipped with advanced tools for material characterisation, chemical analysis, and surface analysis – resources that many small and emerging companies would not otherwise be able to invest in themselves.
“We see MILAB as a matchmaking platform between research and the needs of society. It enables mutual knowledge exchange while the equipment is put to practical use in companies’ product development,” explains Magnus Hummelgård.
Who is MILAB for?
Current users range from well-established industrial companies to young tech startups. What they have in common is a focus on materials and process development, and a need for high-level analysis techniques.
“It’s especially valuable that we can offer companies in our region access to this kind of environment. It improves the conditions for more businesses to start or establish themselves near our research infrastructure,” says Magnus Hummelgård.
Easy to Get Started
Companies interested in using MILAB can choose between two levels of collaboration:
Hourly contracts for specific assignments, where university staff carry out the analyses and provide expertise.
Long-term collaboration agreements, where the company receives training to use the equipment independently on site.
“Clarity, simplicity, and accessibility are our guiding principles. We have a booking system that makes it easy to get started, and we’re always open to discussing each company’s specific needs,” says Magnus Hummelgård.
