Area of interest

Bilingualism, language, and emotion in a social context

Research

My research interests combine language, bilingualism, and emotion, and how they interact in social contexts. I am interested in people speaking a foreign language, with a foreign accent, or with a regional accent from two main points of view. First, I investigate how the majority population perceives and categorises these speakers in terms of social categorisation and prejudice. Furthermore, I am interested in foreign speakers’ own perception and experiences in relation to being a non-native speaker and how it influences their wellbeing and mental health. Additionally, I also investigate how decisions taken in a foreign language differ from decisions taken in a first language. Finally, I investigate how emotions are perceived in different language contexts (in a first or second language), and how bilinguals perceive emotions in facial expressions and in speech.
