New discourses about tourism destination management and organization continue to develop, and a new set of ideas that transcends the normative destination management science, referred to as complexity theory, has entered the realm of tourism research. Although complexity theory has entered the tourism lexicon, its linkage with destination management and organization theory is in need of further research, and in particular for smart destinations. Further development of the innovative linkage and its implications would add another dimension and alternative perspectives to tourism destination research.

The tourism system can be interpreted as an open system with many interdependent actors and elements, which are subject to influences and pressures both by internal and external factors. The global macroenvironment, which destinations react and act against, is constantly changing and evolving. Hence, tourism destination managers need to monitor both the micro- and the macroenvironment to grasp the bigger picture to manage sustainable development related to increased digital pressure. Complexity theory provides an innovative new perspective on organizations. Although complexity theory has developed in the natural sciences, its applications have managerial implications in the organizational realm, providing an innovative perspective to smart destination research.

In my PhD project I want to contribute to the research of linking complexity theory, and destination management and organization, to fill a critical gap by developing a linkage of the existing theory on tourism destinations management and the theory of smart destinations. This research contributes by clarifying the properties of destination management vis-à-vis smart destinations, explicating the definition of smart in relation to destination management and organization, with the help of complexity theory. As there is a gap between the theoretical and conceptual knowledge and the practical development of smart destinations, hopefully my research will decrease this theoretical and practical gap to facilitate the understanding of smart destinations, from a management and organizational perspective.
