Notice of termination
Notice periods for termination are different depending on whether it is the employer or employee who terminates the agreement and whether or not you are in fixed-term or permanent employment.
An employment can be terminated for various reasons, according to the Employment Protection Act (lagen om anställningsskydd – LAS). The most common reasons are:
- An employee resigns
- A fixed-term employment reaches the end of its term
- An employee is laid off due to lack of work
- An employee is dismissed for personal reasons

When employment ends due to retirement or early retirement, the dismissal form (Entledigande) that comes from the National Government Employee Pensions Board should be sent to HR so that they can register the termination.
Employee's notice of termination
Workers who have been employed for up to one year must provide one month's notice. If you have been employed for longer than a year, you must provide two months’ notice.
If you transfer to other government employment
If you are permanently employed by one authority and begin a permanent employment with another, the first position will be terminated. However, we need to receive your notice through Primula via Min sida/Anställning/avslut (My account/employment/terminate).
When a fixed-term employment ends
A worker in fixed-term employment does not need to provide notice; the position is terminated when the period of employment expires. If you have been employed for more than 12 months, you must be notified that the position will be terminated at least one month before the period of employment expires. However, you and the employer can come to an agreement that the employment should be terminated prematurely. This requires the approval of both parties.
The Division of HR and the union organisations must always be informed at the same time as notice is given to the employee. Notice must always be given in writing.
Termination meeting
If you have been employed for at least six months when you quit or take leave of absence, you should have a termination meeting with your supervisor. This meeting is a good opportunity to gather your experiences and suggestions for improvement.

When your employment ends
Return any equipment that you have taken out, along with any travel cards and keys you may have to the Service Centre. If you have had a desktop computer, it should be left locked away in the office.

When you quit your position, you may request a certificate or reference.
