If the residence permit applies for longer than one year, the holder is entitled to national registration. Everyone recorded in the Swedish national register receives a Swedish personal identity number.

If the individual intends to stay in Sweden for less than a year, they will not be recorded in the Swedish national register and will not receive a Swedish personal identity number. If the person must pay tax in Sweden, they will instead receive a so-called coordination number.

National registration is done at the Swedish Tax Agency. This should be done as soon as possible and requires personal appearance. The individual must bring their passport and residence permit decision with them during the visit.

If the person receives a residence permit for less than a year, they will not be entered into the Swedish national register and will have a limited entitlement to social benefits. It is therefore important that insurance cover has been arranged.
