A visa is a permit that is needed in order to travel to and spend time in Sweden and the other Schengen countries for less than three months, such as for visiting friends or relatives, tourism, making business visits, participating in a conference, or just to travel through (transit).

Those who wish to settle in Sweden, for example to be reunited with relatives, must apply for and receive a residence permit before travelling.

The visa must be approved and entered into your passport before travelling into the Schengen area. However, right of entry is checked each time the holder crosses the area's external border. During border checkpoint, everyone entering must be able to show that they have funds to support themselves for the duration of their stay and for travelling home, medical travel insurance, and documents that show the purpose of the visit.

Who is required to have a visa?

Citizens of most countries outside of the EU are required to have a visa in order to visit Sweden and the other Schengen countries.

A link to a list of all countries whose citizens need a visa can be found on the Swedish Migration Board's website.
