The Faculty of Human Sciences has set aside five internationalisation grants of 70,000 SEK each for doctoral students’ international exchange. The purpose of the grant is to promote the internationalisation of doctoral students. The grants are awarded to doctoral students to cover additional costs associated with conducting doctoral studies (dissertation work and/or courses) outside Sweden. The grant, which can only be awarded once to a doctoral student, can be used for travel expenses, accommodation costs, course fees, etc. A suitable time for exchange is when the doctoral student has started their doctoral studies but still has time to assimilate new ideas. The doctoral student gets access to the grant through a special accounting number to record costs up to 70,000. Mid Sweden University’s procured travel agency and debit card is primarily used, but there is also the possibility of travel advances or expense calculations.

The condition for receiving the grant is as follows:

  1. Applicants must be admitted to doctoral studies at the Faculty of Human Sciences at Mid Sweden University and be active in the doctoral education.
  2. The grant should be used for doctoral studies outside Sweden's borders.
  3. The purpose of the exchange should be to promote the doctoral students’ work during the doctoral education.
  4. Feedback to the Council for Third-Cycle Education at the Faculty of Human Sciences shall be made by means of a short memo immediately after the stay abroad.

Application

The application for this grant should include information on:

  • The plan, structure, and purpose of the stay.
  • The place/department where the doctoral education is to be conducted and a formal invitation with information about the stay.
  • The time/date of the stay.
  • A cost calculation (if necessary, subsistence allowance is to be included in the calculation).
  • How MIUN's sustainability and travel policy was followed, and sustainable travel choices pursued by the student.
  • A certificate from the applicant's main supervisor supporting the application.

Application period 21 March – 22 May 2023

The application, which shall not consist of more than three pages (excluding certificates and invitations), must be sent by 22 May 2023 the latest, to Sara Häggström, sara.haggstrom@miun.se, faculty administrative officer at the Faculty of Human Sciences, Mid Sweden University. Mark the application with the title "Grants to the internationalisation of doctoral students 2023".

Assessment and decision

Assessment of the applications are made by the faculty board's Assessment group.

The applications are evaluated based on the following criteria and ranked based on how well they meet these:

  • Clear description of the structure of the stay and a well-justified purpose, describing the work during the specified period of stay.
  • Clear description of how the stay promotes doctoral education and how the time of the stay fits into the doctoral education.
  • Clear and reasonable cost calculations.

Only complete applications are assessed. The faculty board's Assessment group will, together with a proposal on which applications should be granted, provide a justification for the proposal to the Council for doctoral education. The decision is made by the Council for Third-Cycle Education at the Faculty of Human Sciences, at the Council’s meeting in August or September. After the Council has taken a decision, the faculty will expedite the decision to the applicants.

Granted funds must be used within two years of the decision and within the doctoral education. If the funds cannot be used according to the application, the doctoral student should contact the faculty office.
