Mattias O'Nils gets renewed assignment as head of STC Research Centre

STC was established as a research center in 2013 with Professor Mattias O'Nils as leader. Now Mattias has received renewed confidence as head of STC Research Centre for another three years and we take the opportunity to ask Mattias a few questions about his years as leader.

How long have you been head of STC?

– I have been the head of STC since later part of when STC was a research profile funded by the Knowledge Foundation, which started in 2005. When the project concluded in 2013, STC was established as a research center at Mid Sweden University.

What motivates and inspires you as the head of STC?

– I am driven by the progress and growth of our researchers and the center as a whole. Witnessing the remarkable development that we have achieved in the past 10 years fills me with pride and inspiration.

How has STC developed during your years as center leader?

– During my tenure as the head of STC, we have made significant strides in developing our capabilities and advancing our research agenda. We have achieved higher scientific output, with a greater emphasis on quality and a stronger international presence facilitated by our partnerships with 10 visiting professors from around the world. Our success in securing national and international research funding is a testament to our growing reputation and the effectiveness of our research support systems. Additionally, we have deepened our integration with regional companies and organizations, which has enabled us to play a more active role in fostering innovation and driving competence development in the region. Overall, our progress over the years has been a result of our collective effort to build a collaborative and dynamic research environment at STC.

What are your plans for the future of STC?

– STC is active in dynamic areas of research such as the Internet of Things and artificial intelligence, which are experiencing rapid development. As a result, there is a growing interest in our research, which bodes well for our future development. In the coming years, we will place a strong emphasis on expanding our international networks and strengthening our relationships with businesses to better meet the demand for our research.

STC, Sensible Things that Communicate, is one of Mid Sweden University's research centers and conducts research in Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence and sensor systems.
