Since 1972, the Kvarken Council has been a cooperative body in what is known as the Kvarken region, and now Mid Sweden University also becomes a member.

– At a time when society, and perhaps especially in the northern parts of Scandinavia, is developing very quickly, Mid Sweden University sees it as very important that cooperation between countries and regions as well as different types of organizations in the area increases, says Anders Fällström, vice chancellor, Mid Sweden University.

The Kvarken Council EGTS is a Nordic cross-regional cooperation forum for the three Österbotten regions in Finland and the regions of Västerbotten and Västernorrland in Sweden, which together form the Kvarken region. Among other things, the council works to reduce and eliminate border barriers, increase the region's visibility at national and European level, and actively work in several European networks.

– We believe that the research, education and innovation that takes place at the universities have an important role to play in the development of society and that cooperation between the Kvarken region's higher education institutions and between higher education institutions and other actors is a prerequisite for positive and sustainable development. Mid Sweden University has a lot to contribute here, and we also see that other actors in the council can contribute a lot to the university's development, says Anders Fällström.

The Kvarken Council's activities are partly financed by the Nordic Council of Ministers, partly by the main members' membership fees.
