A role model in laser technology and a social worker and author – meet the Alumni of the Year

Enkeleda Balliu, who studied in Sundsvall, has a PhD in electronics and now works in laser technology in Stockholm.  Enkeleda's work and research in laser technology and fiber technology has played a crucial role in the development of new products for national companies and resulted in several scientific publications. She is seen as a role model for young women in laser technology.

"It is both an honour and a great responsibility to be seen as a role model for young girls in my field. I see it as a fantastic opportunity to help shape the future of the next generation and to show that it is possible to achieve your goals regardless of the obstacles you may face," she says.

About being named an alumnus and giving an inspirational lecture, she says the following:

"Coming back as an alumnus and giving a lecture is an extremely special experience. It feels like the circle is closed, to be able to stand in front of students and researchers in a place that has played such an important role in my academic and professional development.

"During my lecture, I will focus on my time as a postdoc at Stanford, where I had the opportunity to work in a world-leading research environment and how this experience has shaped my career and personal development.

Writing her next novel

Zhiwar Rashid graduated as a social worker in Östersund in 2014. In 2023, his debut novel "Under the Mulberry Tree" was released, which is about exile, longing and loss. The novel takes place partly in Östersund and at the social work programme.

"Östersund means a lot to me, I was 22 when I moved there and I was on my way into the adult world. Life as a student was fun and the education opened up a lot for me, it was a time of freedom and development. 

How does it feel to be Alumnus of the Year?

"It's very honorable and nice, I feel very happy and honored.

Right now, Zhiwar is on leave from his job at an HVB home for young people to write his second novel. He will talk about writing during his inspirational lecture. Perhaps.

"Oh, I haven't really decided what I'm going to talk about yet, there's a lot to talk about. But I will probably start with the writing, how the process of "Under the Mulberry Tree" came about, challenges but also difficulties.

"But that can change, there are a few weeks left.

Inspirational lectures will be held on 4 October at 10-12 in Fälldinsalen at Campus Sundsvall.  

At the alumni event, other student award winners such as the Sustainability Award and Nordea's travel grants will also be recognized.
