Visualization at school will investigate advantages by employing digital visualizations in a school environment. The purpose is two-fold: It will contribute to didactive development within the mathematical subject (Mathematics) by considering two different methods of learning geometry, as well as examining the usability and user experience for interactive visualizations and employed technology.
Visualization is techniques and methods that generate a clear mental image of essential data and enable fast and accurate interpretation. Visualization then become a tool for knowledge building, education, learning and decision making. The purpose of the pre-study is to:
- Test alternative learning methods through a digital teaching component in mathematics
- Apply methods of user experiences for interactive visualizations and increase the knowledge on how the user experience relates to used technology.
Two different methods of learning geometry in mathematics are studied in grade 6, traditional teaching compared with 3D visualization. The goal is to contribute to didactic development within the mathematical subject by studying how students learn and how they and teachers perceive two different teaching methods. The objective is also to provide knowledge about 3D visualization within the mathematical subject and see if there are differences in how boys and girls learn by studying the method. The experience of the digital visualizations and the interaction through different devices will investigated and lead to a better understanding of usability and user experience.
The pre-study is carried out in cooperation with both Sundsvall municipality and Härnösand municipality.
