New postdoc at STC

STC Research Centre would like to welcome Igor Fedorov as a new postdoc. Igor will work within the research project MOVEMENTS and focus on development of visual surveillance systems.

What is your background?

I got my engineering degree in electronics in St. Petersburg Baltic State Technical University, Russia, in 2003.  Specialization – TV and optical electronic control systems. I received my PhD in the holographic optical real time recognition area in St. Petersburg State Politechnical University in 2009. Specialty – laser physics. I worked in St. Petersburg Branch of the Cometa Corporation (Science Project Center Optical-Electronic Complexes and Supervision) as an FPGA engineer, senior researcher and acting head of scientific research group from 2002 to 2015. I was senior laboratory researcher at the Laboratory of Optoelectronics and Holography, Ioffe Physical Technical Institute from 2007 to 2009. Also, I worked in St. Petersburg State University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics in the Laboratory of Spectroscopy of Crystal in 2007 and 2008. I was a lead engineer in St. Petersburg MCS Group and Tunnel Tech lmt. in 2015 and 2016.

What is your area of interest?

My research interests include visual surveillance systems in visible range and IR, CCD and CMOS, digital and optical processing, computer vision and machine learning, video compression, holography, laser and FPGA. 

What is it that you are going to investigate as a postdoc?

I will be working in the research project MOVEMENTS which is sponsored by the KK foundation, Vattenfall, Combitech and In Situ Instruments. This project has the objective to find cost efficient method for designing and deploying outdoor visual surveillance system. This because current methods in visual surveillance system will require high deployment and operation costs as well as substantial resources when employed in large volume object monitoring. In most cases, there’s a need to find cost optimal trade-off between the number camera nodes, resources, performance and deployment cost.

What is your relation to Sweden?

I came to Sweden from the other shore of the Baltic Sea, so, I feel very comfortable in Sundsvall.  I love the nature of the north and the snowy winter. I think that the Swedes and the Russians have a lot in common. For example, love for the winter sports and reading. Russian children are actually very fond of books by Astrid Lindgren and Selma Lagerlöf.

Why did you choose Mid Sweden University?

I am very interested in the work at the STC research center. In my opinion, this is one of the most interesting and actual directions of the development of IT technologies. I’m glad that there’s a lot of scientists from different countries working at Mid Sweden University. We have an opportunity to share experiences and contribute to better projects given our different backgrounds from our home countries.
