STC wants to welcome Dr. Ismail Butun, a well renowned researcher within the field of cyber security. He started his position as post-doctorial researcher at Mid Sweden University in July 2017 and will develop security algorithms for Internet of Things (IoT), especially for Smart Grid Security.
Ismail arrived to Sweden in July and this was his first visit to the northern part of Europe. He is currently coming from a positions as a post-doctoral fellow at Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Delaware, and experienced the Swedish summer as quite cold. Now, he has worked for some months at Mid Sweden University and at at least getting warm in his clothes regarding work. We asked some questions to Ismail about his background and his work at Mid Sweden University.
So, what do you think about Sweden?
I have heard Sweden not only from Alfred Nobel but also especially from high tech companies such as Ericsson, Volvo, Electrolux, Scania, IKEA, Saab and from scientific inventions such as phone headset, Tetra Pak, etc. I am also very excited to be introduced to the Baltic Culture, namely the descendants of “Vikings”.
During your PhD, what was your research focused on?
First, I have started working on MAC layer of Wireless Networks and also cross-layer optimization. Then, I moved upwards in the OSI stack and worked on Network layer. After publishing several articles on these topics, I moved working on the Security; especially providing security on Application layer of the OSI stack. My Ph.D. dissertation (at University of South Florida) was about providing security to WSNs, especially on Intrusion Detection Systems.
What are you going to focus on as a Postdoctoral Researcher at STC?
Well, here our focus is on developing security algorithms for Internet of Things (IoT), especially for Smart Grid Systems. IoT is a notion in which all devices (called things) are connected to each other seamlessly to share information about anything, located at anywhere, reached at any time. Smart Grid is a subset of IoT and used by electric utility companies, for the sake of predicting and following instantaneous or long term electricity usage of the individuals, cities, and more importantly countries (national consumption). In order to operate in a safe manner, security must be introduced into these systems. Besides, security provides users’ privacy regarding their electricity usage.
Why did you choose Mid Sweden University?
Sensible Things that Communicate (STC) Research Centre accommodates national/international researchers from various disciplines of engineering. Among these, several are working in my field of research: Cyber Security. That’s why, I wanted to participate STC at Mid Sweden University; to further excel my research with the collaboration of experienced colleagues by working on valuable research topics.
Dr. Butun has more than 20 publications in peer-reviewed scientific international journals and conference proceedings, as well as 1 scientific patent, a Ph.D. dissertation and an M.Sc. thesis.
