Xinyu Ma is a PhD-student within the research group Wireless Sensor System with a focus on Energy harvesting for wireless sensors.

What is your area of interest?

My research topic ‘Energy harvesting for wireless sensors’ is one part of the Sensible Things that Communicate (STC) in Mittuniversitetet. It is concentrated on the sustainable energy that could be used for the wireless sensor nodes, for example, the solar, the wind or the thermal energy. Energy harvesting is not a recent topic, it is researched and discussed for hundreds of years. The sensor node which are launched in remote areas can work for a few decades by using energy harvesting method instead of traditional batteries. It is significantly meaningful for the development of the wireless sensor networks.

What is it that you are going to investigate in your Ph.D?

I have a continue studying of my master-by-research topic ‘Modeling of solar energy harvesting system’. Now the topic expanded to ‘energy harvesting for wireless sensors’, not only the solar energy, but also the wind, the thermal or the artificial light sources. The investigation filed would involve the study of the sources, for example the classification of the artificial light sources, the modeling of the energy harvesters, and the research on the energy buffer device as well as the regulation circuits or the converters.

Why did you choose Sweden and Mid Sweden University?

When I just come to 20 years old, I go to Sweden as an exchange bachelor student with Mid Sweden University, it is the first time I go to Sweden and then I fall in love with this country and this university. The cultural atmosphere of the university is young, energetic and free. I like to study and work in this phenomenon.
