Mid Sweden University will stop using Google

As of the beginning of the 2021 spring semester, Mid Sweden University will stop using Google as a service. We will then switch to the corresponding services in Microsoft Office 365 (O365) and all students will receive an O365 license, linked to their MIUN account.

Background

Earlier this year, Mid Sweden University decided on a strategic direction for the web-based office support, data storage and collaboration. It was decided that Office 365 will be the primary platform for the university’s communication, collaboration and meetings. As a result, Mid Sweden University will stop using Google for managing student accounts, as well as the services available through Google Workspace (Google Apps).

What will happen?

At the beginning of the spring term, when you and your fellow students will gain access to Office 365 and the associated e-mail box, your current Google account will be terminated and deleted. The account will be open and available until March 31, 2021, to make sure you have the time to handle material you wish to keep in your Google Apps.

As a student, you will continue to use your student.miun.se address. However, from the beginning of the spring semester, you will receive an Office 365 license linked to your MIUN account. This means that you will not get a new e-mail address; you will instead get another mailbox with the same address. During the transition period, until March 31, you will have access to both your Google mailbox and your Microsoft mailbox. Please note that the redirection means that all new email will end up in your Microsoft inbox.

About Office 365

Office 365 (O365) is a cloud-based platform with tools to enable work from anywhere and on different platforms. In addition to office software (Word, Powerpoint, Excel, Outlook e-mail and calendar), it also contains several other services, such as software for collaborating, saving and sharing documents, discussing and planning.

Preparations, information and contact

A project group is currently preparing the transition to Office 365 as a platform. At present, routines and other preparations are being completed in order to facilitate to the transition. Further information about Office 365 and about the transfer from Google will be published here, on the Student Web, in the near future.

If you have any questions about this change, please email the project managers bo.zetterlund@miun.se or eva.rodinsvantesson@miun.se.
