The department is located on both Campus Östersund and Campus Sundsvall, where we educate and conduct research within the department's subjects with a focus on sustainable development.
Ecotechnology and Environmental Science at Mid Sweden University as a subject studies how human societies interact with nature. Special emphasis is placed on the development of new systems that enable sustainable use of natural resources. The subject’s research and education methods are interdisciplinary and often system-oriented.
The position is linked to the project Adapting Law for Moving Targets: Climate Change, Overtourism and Biodiversity in Indigenous Arctic National Parks (ALAMOT), which brings together researchers from the natural and social sciences in Sweden, Norway and Finland. The project is funded by Nordforsk.
Job description
Independent third-cycle studies encompassing research (80-100%), teaching and administrative tasks (0-20%).
In the Arctic, the average temperature has increased three times as much as the global average. The impact of rapid and ongoing climate change on the Arctic ecosystems, as well as from other human activities such as tourism, and their relation to declining insect and mammal populations, changes in vegetation, establishment of invasive species, and exploitation of natural resources all require urgent investigation. Our knowledge about the drivers of these changes needs to increase in order to identify and implement sustainable management of Arctic national parks.
The PhD position aims to increase knowledge about how climate change and extreme weather affect habitats and migration patterns as well as the living conditions in Arctic national parks. The PhD project includes mapping and analysis of meteorological and species data as well as field studies. The PhD student will work in a larger interdisciplinary environment with researchers from several Nordic countries, conducting activities both within and outside of Sweden. The doctoral student should also be, or become, comfortable with social science methods as required.

Entry requirements
General entry requirements include a second-cycle level qualification, or fulfilment of courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits must be at second-cycle level, or the equivalent knowledge gained in some other way in Sweden or abroad. Specific entry requirements include at least 90 credits in the subject of environmental science, environmental engineering, meteorology or biology/ecology or the equivalent knowledge gained in some other way in Sweden or abroad.
Assessment criteria
In addition to good subject knowledge, emphasis will be placed on specific knowledge of meteorology, land use conflicts, nature conservation and sustainable regional development. Those applying with skills in numerical data analysis, GIS and modelling will be given extra merit
Personal qualities
The successcful applicant need to have a broad interest for the subject in general and the specific position, as well as strong interpersonal- and communication skills.
Other assessment criteria
In addition to good written and oral language skills in English, basic knowledge of any Scandinavian language is important.
Employment process
Processing of the appointment will comply with the provisions in Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance, and will be carried out in accordance with Mid Sweden University’s Employment Procedures.
Terms of employment
The doctoral studentship position corresponds to four years of full-time studies and is expected to lead to a Degree of Doctor. The entry date is 1 October 2025 or as agreed.
Initial doctoral student positions are valid for a maximum of one year, after which the position may be renewed by no longer than two years at a time. Provisions regarding doctoral studentship employment can be found in the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100), Chapter 5, Sections 1-7.

Salary: In accordance with Mid Sweden University’s salary scale for doctoral students.
