Fotografi GR (A), Digital fotografi
Hello!
Welcome to the course Fotografi GR (A), Digital fotografi and as a student at Mid Sweden University.
My name is Kevin Gater, and I will be the course coordinator.
I’m originally from the UK and have been teaching visual arts for over 20 years. When I’m not teaching, I’m involved in film and media production, gaining valuable experiences that I’ll share with you throughout this course.
The course is taught in English, but feel free to message me in Swedish if you prefer.

The course is designed to be as flexible as possible for you to study at a distance. There are no obligatory meetings and you are not required on campus.
There will be scheduled live sessions that you’re warmly welcome to attend if your timetable allows. These sessions will be recorded and shared on our learning platform, Canvas, so you can catch up shortly afterward.
I’ll meet you live at the start of the course to walk you through Canvas and your assignments. (This session is also recorded if you cannot attend)
Schedule
Four weeks before the start of the course, when you have created you MiunID (student account), you will see your schedule.
Please note that the schedule is updated until the start of the course and there may be changes thereafter if something unforeseen occurs.
Can't find the schedule?
Then you will receive the schedule closer to the start of the course from your course coordinator.
Education information
You will need your own camera. It should be able to shoot in manual mode and RAW. A kit lens will be sufficient. A tripod is useful. For the course, it’s necessary to have access to a computer capable of photo editing. Check the system’s minimum requirements to ensure your computer can run the software smoothly.
We will be using Adobe Photoshop for parts of the course. You may need to purchase a license if you don’t already have one. With a student discount, it currently costs around 200 SEK per month.
While the principles you learn can be applied to other software, we will focus on and demonstrate techniques in Photoshop. You are free to edit images in other applications, but please note that we only provide support for Photoshop when it comes to questions and guidance.
System requirements for various software
Many of the digital tools of the education do not work on ChromeBooks. For example, you cannot use Microsoft 365 programs with full functionality on a Chromebook, for this you need a computer with Windows or MacOSX. This also applies to graphic-intensive programs in design and technology, for example. This also applies if you are going to write a digital exam. To avoid problems, we recommend that you use a Windows or Mac computer instead.
If the course or program has specific equipment requirements, this will be stated in the welcome letter
This is what you need to do as a new student
There are several things you need to do as a new student in order to start your studies. If you are a distance student with campus lectures, you need to familiarize yourself with both checklists.
Follow the checklist carefully! The checklists are in Swedish
