Quantity and/or Quality
Challenges and Possibilities in Teachers' Work and Education
Throughout Europe – and beyond? – demographic changes and increasing political voices demanding educational excellence ask for reactions from the school systems and those who work in them. During the next couple of years a large number of new teachers will be needed because of the retirement of a whole generation of teachers, while student numbers will keep increasing through birth surplus and migration. This is not only a challenge for teacher education, which has to produce more and more legitimized teachers, but also for the work in today's schools. Many schools already have to cope with shortage of qualified employees on a daily basis. At the same time, politicians and members of the public are not getting tired of demanding schools and teachers to produce higher results in terms of international educational comparison such as PISA and TIMSS. Does this equation of need for quantity on the one side and quality on the other seem quite impossible to solve? Or could these challenges be seen as possibilities for rethinking, teachers' work, teacher education and organizing learning?
We invite scholars and practitioners from all fields and age groups to send in their proposals according to the above-mentioned themes and adjacent questions and to share their insights at our upcoming conference. Warm welcome to submit your abstracts no longer than 200 words for paper presentations, 'good practice' examples, or roundtable discussion.
The conference will be held at Mid Sweden University, Sundsvall, from 9–10 November 2016.
Please send your proposals to firstname.lastname@example.org no later than 30 September 2016 for peer review. You will be notified by 10 October 2016 whether your proposal has been accepted.
