Aim

The Master Programme in Tourism aims to give students thorough subject knowledge in Human Geography focusing on Tourism, and the ability to apply their knowledge in independent scientific work. The training aims to provide the necessary skills for jobs in companies and organisations in the tourism sector, in Sweden but also globally.

Programme objectives

After successfully concluding the programme, students will:

• Demonstrate knowledge and understanding within the main field of Human Geography, including both an overview of the area as advanced knowledge in certain parts, especially tourism, as well as a deeper insight into current research and development fields

• Demonstrate deeper methodological knowledge within Human Geography, focusing on Tourism

• From a deeper understanding of an industry in transition be able to critically seek, evaluate and apply knowledge to solve problems within a multidisciplinary context

• Have the ability through their own work to develop the integration of knowledge to deal with complex problems and to formulate judgments based on scientific approaches

• Be able to communicate findings and the underlying knowledge for both specialists as well as those less familiar with the subject, nationally and internationally

Entry requirements

A Bachelor’s degree, with 90 ECTS within the main field of Human Geography, or equivalent
or
A Bachelor’s degree, with 60 credit points within the main field of Human Geography, or equivalent

English course A from Swedish Upper Secondary School (Gymnasium) or equivalent. This can be proven by for example the following international tests:

- TOEFL with a minimum score of 500 on paper based test and not below 4.0 on the TWE
- TOEFL with a minimum score of 173 on computer based test
- TOEFL with a minimum score of 61 on internetbased test
- IELTS Academic Training with a minimum overall score of 5.0 and a minimum score on the specific parts of at least 4.5

Description of programme

The Master in Tourism Programme focuses on students who seek a transition from an academic to a professional working life.

The Master’s Programme is rooted in the strong tourism education tradition and the research environment at Mid Sweden University. It is situated within the university’s Tourism, Sports and Adventure profile area. The programme focuses on Destination development, The experience society and Nature and Culture based tourism. The programme concludes with a practice period and a Master’s thesis
