Aim

The course aims at providing a deeper knowledge and understanding in tourism studies. The students apply theoretical and methodological skills to the process of writing an independent scientific thesis.

Course objectives

Upon completion of this course the student should be in the position to:

1. Recognize a relevant problem that deserves scientific attention, develop research questions and construct a theoretical framework for the study; interpret the results from an analysis of primary data; and present a mature discussion of the findings.
2. Be responsible for the successful development and completion of a scientific text.
3. Through supervision complete a project that has scientific relevance in the field of tourism studies.
3. Apply knowledge to effectively be in a position to oppose and discuss the scientific work of her/his peers.
4. Effectively communicate acquired knowledge orally and in writing to various audiences.

Content

This course focuses on each student's independent thesis work. Students are designated an advisor and work closely with her/him in terms of developing the thesis through all its stages (problem statement, research questions, literature review, method, findings, and discussion) to a complete version ready for a public defence. The course is the last course in the program.

Entry requirements

A bachelor' s degree of at least 180 credits (ECTS) and English course 6/English course B from Swedish Upper Secondary School (Gymnasium) or the equivalent.
The students must also successfully have passed the following preceding courses in the program, which are respectively Tourism in a Changing World 7,5 credits, Tourism and the Sustainability Agenda 7,5 credits, Quantitative Methods in Tourism 7,5 credits, Qualitative Methods in Tourism 7,5 credits and Independent Reading Course, a minimum of 2,5 credits.

Selection rules and procedures

The selection process is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and the local order of admission.

Teaching form

Mostly through meetings with assigned supervisors, defence seminars.

During examinations, attendance is compulsory.

Teaching and feedback can be in English.

Teaching will be through the Mid-Sweden web-based system.

Examination form

1000: Independent Project, 15 Credits
Grade scale: Fail (U), Pass (G), or Pass with distinction (VG)

1. Write and publicly defend a scientific thesis.
2. Oppose and effectively discuss the work of a peer.

At home examinations or other written assignments, a complementary oral presentation may be requested by the teacher. The student should hence demonstrate the necessary knowledge to ensure that the student is the actual sender and the author of the written work.

The examiner has the right to offer alternative examination arrangements to students who have been granted the right to special support by Mid Sweden University's disabilities adviser.

Examination restrictions

Students admitted to the previous version of this course have the right to graduate 3 times within 1 year according to that syllabus. Thereafter the students are transferred to this syllabus.
