CER researchers in SvD debate
In today's SvD, CER's center director Peter Öhman urges our decision-makers not to jeopardize the supervision of audits and auditors.
The debate article, co-authored with Jan Marton at the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg, is based on the government inquiry into how state agencies should be organised (SOU 2025:13). It argues that the integration of one agency into another is not as unproblematic as the inquiry suggests.
The inquiry's proposal to integrate the Inspectorate of Public Accountants (RI), with around 20 employees, into the Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority (FI), which has approximately 650 employees, would likely benefit the public finances in the short term. In the longer term, however, there is a significant risk that the importance of auditing will be downplayed. According to the debate article, this would not only carry symbolic weight but could also lead to increased costs for society.
