Title: Engineering Bio-Based Materials: Bridging Fundamentals and a Sustainable Future

"The challenge of our time is clear: we must reduce our reliance on non-renewable resources, minimize our environmental footprint, and build a truly circular economy. This seminar explores the intersection of materials science and chemical engineering, focusing on the development of highly functional, sustainable bio-based materials to address these global imperatives. At the core of this research is cellulose, a renewable and abundant biomacromolecule. Both fundamental and applied investigations are central to understanding how cellulose interacts with inorganic and organic compounds in various systems, allowing us to engineer materials with tailored properties for a range of emerging applications. This talk will cover three ongoing research pillars: controlling and identifying cellulose structure and corresponding properties; utilizing cellulose in self-powered devices and advanced air filtration; and cellulose mineralization as a nature-inspired, accelerated approach for carbon capture and utilization (CCU), to transform industrial side streams into high-value composites for biomedical and construction applications."
