Ola Harrysson professor vid North Carolina State University

Ola is one of the pioneers in the field of additive manufacturing with a special focus on metal. Since the early 2000s, his research has been world leading and important for the development and growth in the field of additive manufacturing in metal, both in Sweden and in the world. He is continuously invited to seminars aimed at both academia and industry in Sweden to convey an international perspective in the field. He is currently the research leader of the Center for Additive Manufacturing and Logistics (CAMAL) at NCSU.

- It's incredibly fun and stimulating to connect us to such a qualified researcher as Ola. Over the years, we at Sports Tech Research Centre have both been challenged and inspired by the research in Ola’s group and now we get the chance to build up really strong relationships between us, which I hope will benefit both parties. The goal is for us to achieve long-term collaborations in both education and research. In this way we can contribute to Mid Sweden University’s strategy for internationalization, says Lars-Erik Rännar, Professor of Mechanical Engineering.

A few words with Ola Harrysson, new visiting professor

In what field do you do research and teach?

I teach courses in additive manufacturing and product development. I have also taught courses in traditional manufacturing techniques and “biomodeling” (additive manufactured for medical applications). A large part of my research is about medical applications of additive manufacturing of both plastic and metal processes. Otherwise, we work a lot with material development for additive metal production and post-processing metal articles.

How come you've chosen to work with us?

I have collaborated with the group at Mid Sweden University for many years and have visited you several times. We have long been looking for an opportunity to cooperate and this was a very good opportunity.

What are your expectations for the collaboration?

Our two groups have different experiences of both teaching and research in additive manufacturing and it is always good to learn from each other. We hope to develop new teaching materials for additive manufacturing and initiate research collaborations. We hope to be able to have student exchanges in the near future.

You have been appointed Honorary Doctor of Technology at Mid Sweden University for your importance for the development of additive manufacturing in Sweden and internationally. Congratulations! Thoughts about it?

It’s always fun to be noticed and I look forward to the ceremony, when it can happen.

Finally, what do you do when you're not doing research and teaching?

I have many interests like sailing, common fishing, fly fishing, mountain biking, diving and snowboarding. I like being out in nature. Other interests are cooking and music. I try to involve my son in as many different activities as I can, so we have a lot of fun together on the weekends.
