Stefan Roos dissertation
A few hours ago, Stefan Roos defended his doctoral thesis in front of an audience of about twenty at Campus Östersund. The thesis entitled "Electron beam powder bed processing of stainless steels" was unanimously approved by the examining committee.
Stefan's main supervisor has been Lars-Erik Rännar. Co-supervisors were Andrey Koptyug and Carlos Botero, all active at the Sports Tech Research Centre. The opponent was Prof. Iain Todd from the University of Sheffield. The examining committee consisted of Professor Eduard Hryha from Chalmers University of Technology, Professor Urban Wiklund, Uppsala University and Associate Professor Maria Asuncion Valiente Bermejo from University West.
Additive manufacturing is on the rise. One of the technologies for additive manufacturing is Electron beam powder bed fusion, which uses an electron beam to melt metal powder into finished components. Today, the technology more or less completely lacks process parameters for stainless steels, thus limiting the possibility of applications, despite the fact that the material is so widely used.
This thesis investigates the possibility of processing stainless steel and what the resulting material properties will be. The results also show what the effects on the final material will be when using different process parameters. Finally, a new method for obtaining information about the electron beam's energy distribution is shown, something that has a major impact on the result of the process.
