"Spikning" with William Sjöström
On Tuesday, William Sjöström "nailed" his thesis "Material Development for Electron Beam-based Powder Bed Fusion" at the library in Östersund.
On Tuesday 26 March, he will defend his licentiate thesis in mechanical engineering, specialising in sports technology and additive manufacturing at Campus Östersund.
Welcome to participate in the seminar on March 26!
Electron beam-based powder bed fusion is a form of additive manufacturing in which layers of metal powders are consolidated into components. This thesis investigates how the method can be developed to create unique material properties by developing new process parameters and developing the process environment. A heating method to counteract electrical charging is introduced and the results show good opportunities to increase the processability of previously difficult to process materials. A method for building multimaterials is introduced and demonstrated by producing direct and laminar transitions between different alloys. A new material category is introduced by showing that a ceramic powder can be processed at high temperatures (~1600°C). The thesis has led to new variants of the process being made possible and that knowledge regarding related material processes has increased.
