Mohadeseh Ghorbani from Tehran is one of our new PhD students at Sports Tech Research Centre. Hands-on experience with 3D printing during her master’s thesis sparked an interest in additive manufacturing, leading to PhD studies here at Mid Sweden University.

What is your background?

I originally come from Tehran in Iran. I hold a Bachelor of Science in solid state physics from Shahid Beheshti University and a Master of Science from Tarbiat Modares University in applied condensed matter physics. Through my thesis I worked with 3D printers and after that I was interested to pursue the field of additive manufacturing. I also taught physics in Tehran and I had a very inspiring relationship with my students and I also worked as a lab assistant at my former university. I’m very pleased to back in academia again.

How come you chose Mid Sweden University?

While browsing academic articles online, I came across one written by William Sjöström, a PhD student at Mid Sweden University. It caught my attention and made me curious about the university and its research. Since I already had hands-on experience with plastic 3D printer, I felt this was the right place to continue my journey in the field.

What is going to be your focus during your PhD studies?

My research will focus on developing methods for processing tungsten using powder bed fusion techniques – a form of additive manufacturing. Tungsten is a challenging material due to its high melting point and brittleness, so this work involves exploring innovative approaches to make it suitable for advanced applications. I’ll be working extensively in the lab, conducting experiments, analysing results, and refining processing parameters.

What are your expectations of the PhD program and your research environment?

I really like to grow in this environment, and I want to either pursue an academic or industrial career. And I also like to learn from experienced researchers in this field so I’m really looking forward to this chance. I think this is a big opportunity for all of us since our group has a vibrant atmosphere, and because it is related to industries, we can learn a lot.

How do you like Östersund?

I lived in a busy city before, and this city is so cosy, friendly and calm. I really enjoy living here and now I feel calm and I think its lovely to be so close to nature. I would also really love to learn how to ski. Also, I compete in chess, so I would like to find a local chess club.
