The STC research group Communication Systems and Networks, CSN, participates in a three-year project: Quantum Safe Cryptography for the Internet of Things. The procect is led by Simula@UiB and financed by Norwegian Research Council.

The project partners are Simula@UiB, University of Bergen, NTNU, Norwegian National Security Authority from Norway, University of Bochum, Germany and University of Valladolid, Spain.

STC researchers involved in the project are Professor Mikael Gidlund, Assistant Professor Ulf Jennehag, Dr. Mohammed Eldefrawy, Dr. Ismail Butun, and PhD student Teklay Gebremichael.

The project objective

The main objective of the project is to address fundamental research in the area of post quantum cryptography and cryptographic protocols for the Internet of Things (IoT). Many IoT devices operate in constrained computing environment that requires lightweight solutions.

Normally we have symmetric primitives in mind when talking about lightweight crypto, but for a full security solution in IoT communication, we have to consider lightweight versions of other kinds of primitives. This project will need lightweight quantum safe versions of asymmetric ciphers and key exchange mechanisms.

It is not clear how existing primitives in this category will scale with respect to resources like chip area, memory, power consumption or latency and therefore there is a strong need for more research in this area. For our research group this is an excellent opportunity to work with world-leading scientists in the field of cryptography and it is one-step in our strategic decision to build up good competence in the area of security. The CSN group will mainly work with cryptographic protocols and analysis.
