Welcome Dr. Keyvan Jaferzadeh, our new Postdoc here at STC! He has joined the research group Visual Sensor Systems in the project MiLo. He will focus on the detection of different types of road surfaces using a line scan hyperspectral cameras with the addition of a Machine Learning platform.

 Keyvan Jaferzadeh

Can you tell us a little about your background?

I am from a small city surrounded by mountains located in the west of Iran named Khorramabad which means delightful. When I was a teenager, I realized that I love computers and programming. I used to borrow old computers and electronic magazines from different people to keep up my interests.

After high school, I decided to study mathematics and physics. Going to the university opened my eyes to the world of electronic engineering and computer science. Four years of studying software engineering could not calm my passion and I continued to study another two years of M.Sc. in Mechatronics Engineering. My journey kept going and in 2018 I obtained my Ph.D. in computer science from South Korea with a grant from the Korean Government.

What is your area of interest?

Since I studied several different topics, my area of interest is quite vast. I started with programming, worked in the Image Compression field and I ended up at using laser applications in life sciences. My Ph.D. thesis is about studying biological samples (mostly human cells) with the label-free phase imaging with digital holography. I am also very interested in using Machine Learning in different applications such as life sciences, light engineering, etc.

What is are you going to research in here at STC?

Our project's goal is to use ambient light to detect different types of road surfaces like ice, snow, water, sand and asphalt. This is very critical for road traffic control platforms. To achieve this, we are using a line scan hyperspectral camera and we want to develop methods and an integrated platform to be able to distinguish different surfaces. We also like to add Machine Learning to our final platform.

Why did you choose Mid Sweden University?

I really wanted to experience living and working in the Nordics. The open position at Mid Sweden University seemed very interesting to me and I made my mind and came here.

How do you like it here so far?

Coming here occurred with the pandemic of the Coronavirus. It was not an easy start but smoothly things are going well. I also had a little taste of the winter here. I really like the clean and fresh air in here. Plus, grocery shops are the most interesting place for my wife and me since we lived in South Korea for six years and a half and things were different there.

What do you do in your spare time?

When I was in South Korea most of my spare time went for outdoor rock climbing. I want to experience it in here, and also going to enjoy kayaking and canoeing on lakes in Sundsvall.
