In the end of 2019 PhD-student Rául Rondón received a scholarship of 30 000 SEK from Ericsson Research Foundation to make a two-month long visit to the Centre for Wireless Communications at the University of Oulu in Finland.

Rául Rondón

The research Centre for Wireless Communication (CWC) got around 150 experts in their research team. This makes CWC one of Europe's largest research centers in the area. Their expertise covers the systemic, network, device and circuit levels in the following research focus areas such as 5G, IoT, AI and Machine learning. Rául visited Prof. Mehdi Bennis research group Intelligent Connectivity and Networks/Systems Group (ICON). That ICON group is a world leading research group in the area of AI/ML for wireless communication.

Rául Rondón is a PhD-student at STC Research Centre within the research project NIIT – Next generation Industrial IoT. His research is focused on real-time communication, sensor networks, Industrial IoT, low-energy communication systems, and URLLC.

This visit allowed me to see new potential leads on my research topic for the remaining of my PhD studies and inspired me to explore new concepts and tools.

- During my time at the (CWC). I had the opportunity to closely work with Prof. Bennis and his team and learn about the innovative approaches and concepts they use in the field of Ultra Reliable Low Latency Communication (URLLC) and Machine Learning in communication systems. Besides the technical knowledge, I also got to experience their way of problem modeling and conceptualization, which is extremely important in research tasks.

The Ericsson Research Foundation purpose is to promote scientific research through grants to scientists and master’s students at Swedish universities and institutes. Typical uses for the grant are partial financing of a research visit at a foreign university or for presenting an accepted paper at a conference.

- This visit allowed me to see new potential leads on my research topic for the remaining of my PhD studies and inspired me to explore concepts and tools that are new to me, which will improve the quality and reach of my future works.
