Meet Yuxuan Zhang, new PhD‑student at STC

Tell me a little about your background?

I come from China and I got a bachelor degree in new energy science & engineering from Beijing Information Science & Technology University in China and a master's degree in embedded systems engineering from the University of Leeds in the UK.

Why did you choose to apply for the position as an PhD-student Mid Sweden University?

The first reason is that my project is the combination of machine learning and embedded systems, which interests me very much. My master's project is mainly to recognize handwritten digits through FPGA and deep learning in embedded systems. The PhD project is an extension of my master's project.

The second reason is that I want to try what it's like to live in a different country. I have lived in China and the UK before and traveled to Spain, France, Switzerland and the Netherlands. As one of the representative countries of Northern Europe, Sweden is worth experiencing.

The third reason is that my undergraduate school has a cooperative relationship with Mid Sweden University. I got in touch with the seniors of my undergraduate school through LinkedIn, and Mid Sweden University has gained a good reputation.

What is it that you are going to investigate as a PhD-student?

The main purpose of my PhD project is to study how to use machine learning on low-power MCUs to make failure detection in industries, such as aircraft mechanical structures, to improve economic efficiency and accelerate the arrival of Next Generation Industrial (IoT).

You just moved to Sundsvall and started you position. What have you done so far and what is your experience?

In work, I am doing background knowledge study for future research. In life, my supervisors, Bengt and Sebastian, and my senior colleagues including but not limited to Siwen An, Xiaotian Li, Ye Xu have helped me a lot in renting, furniture and city introduction.
