Jonghoon Yim from Korea deepening his knowledge in Visual AI at Mid Sweden University
PhD-student Jonghoon Yim from Sungkyunkwan University in Korea visited Mid Sweden University to initiate new research collaborations within the research area of light field processing and Visual AI.
In the end of 2023, Prof. Mårten Sjöström together with PhD-student Yi-Hsin Li, participated at the research conference VCIP 2023 in Jeju, Korea, to present their work. At the conference Prof. Sjöström got in contact with the conference organizer and identified that they worked within the same field of image- and video-coding and light-field, which is one of the main research areas for Prof. Sjöström and his research group Realistic 3D.
As a result of this meeting, a new collaboration started and in the end of February 2024, PhD-student Jonghoon Yim, from Sungkyunkwan University, visited Mid Sweden University.
PhD-student Jonghoon Yim spent three weeks in Sweden to establish contacts and deepen his knowledge in Visual AI.
- This opportunity has provided me with more in-depth knowledge. It is valuable to meet and work together with students and PhD-students from other universities who are active in the same field, says Jonghoon Yim.
During this period, he has spent a lot of time together with his Swedish counterparts in Mid Sweden University's 3D lab.
- This has provided me with more knowledge about image processing for immersive media. Being able to connect in this way, by meeting and working together, is truly an opportunity for professional development in one's field, Jonghoon Yim concludes.
Soon, he will be back home in South Korea again, but would gladly return to Sweden and Mid Sweden University.
- I appreciate both the academic environment here and Sweden as a country, he says.
Prof. Mårten Sjöström is also pleased with this new collaboration and Jonghoon’s visit.
- It's always interesting with new influences and getting to know new people. Jonghoon presented an interesting proposal for research that we can collaborate on. He has done initial tests for his idea based on our feedback and suggestions, say Prof. Mårten Sjöström.
Now, Jonghoon returns to Korea, but the collaboration continues tells Prof. Sjöström.
- Jonghoon will investigate previous publications in more detail and do more initial tests. We will hold regular online meetings to develop the idea and take the research further into a publication. Jonghoon had a good exchange with the entire research group and got to know our PhD-students. Hopefully, this is good foundation for continued collaboration with both Mid Sweden University and the PhD-students throughout their careers, says Prof. Mårten Sjöström.
At STC Research Centre and the Research Group Realistic 3D, researcher works strategically with international collaborations. Primarily to develop research collaborations, but also to create more diversity and broaden perspectives.
