Guest Professor Bruno Andó strengthens research ties with STC
In late August, Mid Sweden University welcomed Guest Professor Bruno Andó from the University of Catania, Italy. During his visit to Sundsvall, Professor Andó met with Associate Prof. Sebastian Bader at the STC Research Centre to explore opportunities for collaboration between the two universities.
A Strong Research Environment in Catania
Professor Andó, who began his role as Guest Professor at Mid Sweden University in April 2025, is part of a large research team at the University of Catania that brings together around 100 professors, 100 PhD students, and over 400 graduates each year. The group spans over three disciplines electronics, electrical engineering and computer engineering, with a focus on smart multi-sensor systems with applications in areas such as rapid prototyping, assistive technology and environmental monitoring.
- Our team are experts in sensor characterization with more than 30 years of experience within this field. It’s an important and sometimes overlooked research area, but it remains fundamental, explains Professor Andó.
First Visit to Sundsvall
As part of the new collaboration, Professor Andó sent two of his PhD-students ahead of his own visit. The students will spend four months in Sundsvall, working with Sebastian Bader’s team.
- My students are working on rapid prototyping and assistive technology. Together with Sebastian’s team they have worked in the lab to develop a new methodology for experimenting with demonstrators, says Professor Andó.
Prof. Andó gave an appreciated presentation about his research which had many common denominators with the STC Research Center.
During his stay, Professor Andó also held an open lecture where he presented his research and demonstrated its application in real-world contexts. He highlighted assistive technology as one of the most impactful areas of development.
- Assistive technology is an important application field with the goal of creating safer environments and improving quality of life, especially for active aging and well-being, he notes.
Looking Ahead: Building a Long-Term Partnership
The visit marks the beginning of what both universities hope will become a long-term partnership.
- We plan to write joint publications and apply for international research funding together. Hopefully, we can also extend this collaboration to colleagues in other countries in the future, says Professor Andó.
