Recently, Swedish Radio P4 Västernorrland visited Mid Sweden University to interview Professor Mårten Sjöström about research on artificial intelligence and remote control. The report highlights how new technology can be used to create safer working environments and open up new opportunities in both industry and healthcare.

Mårten Sjöström talks about how AI in combination with advanced sensor technology and remote control can reduce risks in, for example, mining environments. By allowing operators to work remotely, it becomes possible to avoid dangerous situations, while at the same time increasing efficiency.

The report also addresses more future-oriented applications, such as the possibility of remote surgery, where specialists with the support of AI and high-resolution, immersive systems can collaborate over long distances. In the long term, the technology can contribute to better access to specialist expertise, especially in sparsely populated areas.

The research described in the feature is conducted within the framework of the IMMERSE project, which investigates how enhanced remote presence and remote control can be developed and used in practice. IMMERSE is carried out in a collaboration between Mid Sweden University and the University of Oulu with support from the EU program Interreg Aurora.

The report provides an insight into how Mid Sweden University's research contributes to the development of future working methods and how AI can be useful far beyond the laboratory environments.
