What can the AI investments in the region mean for Mid Sweden University?
Mid Sweden University's AI investment is highlighted as a decisive factor in last week's big establishment news, the investment in an AI center in Sundsvall. What kind of investment is planned in Sundsvall?
It is a large AI center and where Verda Cloud Oy has also announced that they plan to establish a research and development department and an AI campus on the site. An AI Campus serves as an innovation centre for AI development and a meeting place for universities, research institutes and the business community so that together they can drive AI development forward. It serves as a hub for innovation, education, and practical application of AI technology.
What is the difference between a data center and an AI center?
An AI center is much more advanced than a regular data center. There are powerful computers that are specially built to train AI models. They place higher demands on electricity supply, cooling and operation than a traditional data center.
In addition to the investment in Sundsvall, Sollefteå municipality has also signed an agreement with atNorth to establish a large-scale AI center. What do the investments mean for Mid Sweden University?
If all the elements fall into place, this could be of great importance to our students, to our research and our collaboration with the surrounding society. It can provide a major boost for the region and contribute to Sweden's resilience through a national AI resource.
We are now planning to start a pre-study and an implementation project to meet the new establishments. The pre-study will identify development needs and what the university needs to prioritise to ensure that the initiatives will have the greatest possible effect on Mid Sweden University and the region.
The initiatives are well in line with the university's major investment in a new AI lab that will contribute to the development of the next generation of AI education and research.
