PhD-student Marianthi Adamopoulou recently presented her research during a halftime seminar at Mid Sweden University. Her work focuses on sound imaging and how deep learning can be used together with simple microphone setups to visualize and classify sound.

The halftime seminar was held on Monday, April 27, with Tuomas Virtanen from Tampere University serving as opponent. Supervisor is Jan Lundgren.

- Sound imaging is the visualization of sound. In my research, I focus on simple microphone setups that, together with deep learning, can work on complex tasks and produce reliable results, says Marianthi.

The goal of the research is to develop methods that can be used in real-world applications and contribute to improving people’s everyday lives. One area of interest is automatic sound classification, where systems could detect important sounds at an early stage and provide warnings.

- I was drawn to sound imaging because it lets you turn something invisible into something you can see. The idea of giving shape to sound, especially sounds we might not even hear, really fascinated me, says Marianthi.

According to Marianthi Adamopoulou, the halftime seminar provided an important opportunity to present and discuss the research.

- It was a great experience. It gave me the opportunity to present my work and bring it closer to people. My discussion with Professor Tuomas Virtanen was very valuable. His feedback made me see my topic from different perspectives and redefine how I approach the applications, tells Marianthi.

The next step in the research is to continue developing more efficient virtual upsampling methods to improve performance while keeping the systems lightweight. Marianthi is also planning a summer research internship abroad to deepen her knowledge within the field.

- I am happy to be part of my research group at Mid Sweden University. I have received great support and guidance throughout my studies, providing me with a beautiful and friendly environment and shaping my research life, Marianthi concludes.
