Fire history and forest structure in pine forest on Northern Mountain in Sundsvall

The project is a collaborative project between the biology group at Mid Sweden University, forest manager for the nature reserve on Norraberget in Sundsvall and responsible for the Northern Mountain open-air museum.

The project aims to investigate the structure and fire history of the North Mountain pine-dominated forests.

The project is a collaborative project between the biology group at Mid Sweden University, forest manager for the nature reserve on Norraberget in Sundsvall and responsible for the Northern Mountain open-air museum. The project aims to investigate the structure and fire history of the North Mountain pine-dominated forests.

These forests have a high level of naturality and bear only few traces of human influence, and there are many ancient pines, some of which bear traces of historical fires. The area is primarily unique because of these high levels of naturalness but also because of the proximity to Sundsvall city centre. On the North Mountain there are also existing fine exhibitions with great visitor numbers where the region’s schools are also a visitor group.

The project therefore also aims to create a permanent exhibition about the reserve’s natural forests and fires that the area has experienced. Not least, the results from the study will be interesting when Sundsvall City celebrates 400 years 2021. The results from the study also have bearing on the management plans for the reserve.

This is a project in collaboration with Sundsvall municipality in accordance with the collaboration agreement.
