New survey study on how spending time in nature affects the health of the elderly
Researcher Kristin Godtman Kling is currently conducting a survey with people aged 70 and over in the municipalities of Östersund and Härnösand, to map how they view accessibility in and to natural environments and outdoor activities, as well as the importance of visits to nature for health.
The survey also includes questions about transport to nature areas, organised outdoor activities and what is important to improve in order for more people to have better opportunities for nature experiences. The aim has been to gain better knowledge about accessibility and opportunities for everyone to have access to outdoor activities, recreation and physical activity in natural areas in each municipality.
– We also hope to gain better knowledge about what people who have turned 70 want for improvements or changes in natural areas so that these are accessible to as many people as possible, says Kristin Godtman Kling, explaining that another important issue has been to find out what role associations and public activities such as the municipality can play in promoting physical activity outdoors.
To get in touch with the target group, associations and organizations have been used to get in touch with people who want to respond to the survey.
– For example, we have contacted PRO, various study associations, local history associations, the municipality's meeting places and SKPF Pensioners, to name a few. This has resulted in a good response rate and has meant a lot for the implementation of the study.
